Activist Angela Davis is coming to one of the cities that was at the heart of the Civil Rights Movement. On January 14th, she will be speaking at a banquet for the Mid-South Peace and Justice Center.

The event is put together by Just City, Rhodes College and the Women's Foundation of Greater Memphis. Tickets for the entire program are $35 until January 1st and $50 after that.

Davis is speaking at 7 p.m. Those who want to attend her presentation can post a pay-what-you-can rate with a $10 suggested donation.

Davis teaches at the University of California, Santa Cruz as a professor of the History of Consciousness and Feminist Studies. She has written nine books and speaks across the globe.

Early in her life as an activist, Davis was imprisoned for her beliefs, but she was ultimately found not guilty. She founded Critical Resistance to work towards abolishing the prison-industrial complex.

As a teenager, Davis started interracial study groups that the police broke up. She got her undergraduate degree from Brandeis University and went to graduate school at the University of California, San Diego.
