Ithaca College brought one of the most prominent activists in the black community to campus last month. Marlon Peterson came to speak as part of the school's week of events celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

Peterson was the keynote speaker for the kickoff event on January 23rd in Emerson Suites. He spoke about the criminal justice system, violence prevention and youth development.

Peterson spent extensive time addressing the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals. His conversation was followed by a Q&A session with the audience.

Peterson shares his views on social issues regularly as host of the Decarcerated Podcast. He is also the founder and currently serves as chief re-imaginator of the social justice consulting firm, The Precedential Group.

After Peterson's teenage years were filled with crime, he spent his entire 20s in New York State prisons. During this time, he earned an associates degree in criminal justice and was the head of the Transitional Services Center.

In 2015, Peterson was the recipient of the Soros Justice Fellowship. He has been named one of America's 100 most influential and inspiring leaders in the Black community by Ebony Magazine.
