American Civil Rights Pioneer C.T. Vivian Speaks at Peach Bowl Lecture

While bowl games are normally filled with activities for the participating football teams, the Peach Bowl had a specifically impactful event. On Ebenezer Baptist Church, players from Alabama and Washington gathered to learn about Atlanta's Civil Rights story. 

One of the speakers at the lecture was Civil Rights pioneer C.T. Vivian. Event organizers wanted those participating in the game to develop an appreciation for Atlanta's history. 

This year, the Peach Bowl serves as one of the College Football Playoff semifinal games. It takes place on Saturday. 

During the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, Vivian was a close confidant to Martin Luther King Jr. He was a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and took part in the Freedom Rides. 

Vivian organized several sit-in demonstrations during his time as an activist. He has founded several groups, including the C.T. Vivian Leadership Institute Inc. 

Vivian continues to be a top speaker and has addressed the United Nations. In 2013, he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
