Civil rights leader Benjamin Chavis recently spoke at an important community event in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.  He was the keynote speaker on Sunday at the inaugural Lee Henry Jr. White Hat Award Gala.

The gala celebrates the memory of Henry Jr., the founder of the Westside Gazette Newspaper and the Sickle Cell Disease Association of Broward.  The awards handed out recognized tremendous community leaders.

It began at 4:00 p.m. at the Mary N. Porter Riverview Ballroom at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts.  The donor and sponsor support for the event was especially appreciated.

Chavis got his start in the civil rights movement working with Martin Luther King Jr. and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference while in college.

In the 1970's, Chavis gained notoriety as a member of the Wilmington 10 that was imprisoned and subsequently had their convictions overturned.  Following his release, he became vice president of the National Council of Churches.

Chavis has also served as the executive director of the NAACP.  He is currently president of the National Newspaper Publishers Association.
