This past Thursday, the Martha's Vineyard Hebrew Center kicked off their Summer Institute Speaker Series.  Historian James Carroll was the first speaker.

He presented from 7:30-9 p.m.  Most of the conversation centered around Carroll's new book, "Christ Actually: The Son of God for the Secular Age".

Speakers are scheduled to visit the Center through August 11th.  This Thursday, Washington Post political columnist E.J. Dionne will be the speaker.

Carroll started with The Boson Globe as an op-ed columnist in 1992 and retired from the paper this past year.  In 2012, his work won the Scripps Howard National Journalism Award for Commentary.

Additionally, Carroll is the author of 19 books, which have been a mix of fiction and non-fiction.  He published his first novel in 1976 and his 1996 memoir won the National Book Award for nonfiction.

Carroll certainly has a unique background, having been ordained as a Catholic priest in 1969.  He was the Catholic Chaplain at Boston University from 1969-1974 before leaving the priesthood.
