Illinois Welcomes PayPal Co-Founder Max Levchin Back as Commencement Speaker

PayPal co-founder Max Levchin left the University of Illinois and began to innovate. He will return to campus this spring and share stories from his personal journey of success. 

Levchin is speaking at Illinois' commencement on May 12 at 9:30 a.m. Graduates from 13 different colleges at UI will be recognized during the ceremony. 

In 1997, Levchin graduated from the school with a bachelor of science degree in Computer Science. In an email, University Spokeswoman Robin Kaler said they wanted to find someone to speak who exhibited, "leadership, creativity and innovation." 

Levchin teamed with Peter Thiel to co-found PayPal, Inc. and take it public in 2002. That year, he was named one of the top innovators in the world under the age of 35 by the MIT Technology Review TR100. 

Levchin went on to found the personal media-sharing service, Slide, in 2004. He was one of the main forces behind the creation of Yelp and served as chair of the company's board of directors until 2015. 

Levchin was the co-founder and current CEO of the financial technologies company, Affirm. He is the first Silicon Valley executive to be appointed to the United States Consumer Financial Protection Bureau's Consumer Advisory Board.
