A top advocate for musicians and their music keynoted last week's Jazz Connect Conference. Maria Schneider spoke at the event on January 5th.
The conference was held by JazzTimes and the Jazz Forward Coalition. Schneider's presentation took place at 12:15 p.m. at Saint Peter's Church in New York City.
The theme of the conference was "The Family of Jazz" and it runs straight into the APAP|NYC conference. Winter JazzFest was also held over the weekend.
The Maria Schneider Orchestra released their debut recording in 1994. They have received 12 Grammy nominations and won five times.
Through her company, ArtistShare, Schneider has become for unique music funding projects. Her 2004 album, "Concert in the Garden," was the first to win a Grammy despite being sold 100 percent online.
Schneider has testified in front of the U.S. Congressional Subcommittee on Intellectual Property. In 2014, she received the Concert Music Award from ASCAP.
