The acclaimed singer Harry Belafonte is coming to Purdue University. He will keynote the school's Dr. Martin Luther King celebration on January 17th.

The theme of the event is, "The Fierce Urgency of Now: Where Do We Go from Here?" Belafonte's presentation takes place at 7 p.m. in the Stewart Center Loeb Playhouse.

The session is free and open to the public. Before Belafonte speaks, there will be a candlelight vigil and a march to the Loeb Playhouse.

Belafonte broke onto the scene in the 1950s and popularized the Carribean musical style in the U.S. His 1956 album "Calypso" was the first album released by a single artist to sell a million copies.

During that period, Belafonte was also a popular film star. He has won three Grammy Awards, an Emmy Award a Tony Award along with receiving the National Medal of Arts in 1994.

Belafonte was active in the Civil Rights Movement and a close confidant of Dr. King. Since 1987, he has been a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador.
