John Hopkins University is kicking off their annual Foreign Affairs Symposium Speaker Series with a particularly notable personality.  Many people know about the popular Netflix series, "Orange is the New Black", but few know the real-life story behind it.

On February 10th, they will find out when the author of the book adapted into the show, Piper Kerman, comes to speak.  The presentation takes place at 8 p.m. at Shriver Hall on campus.

The event is free and open to the public, but reserved seats can be purchased in advance for $25.  The Foreign Affairs Symposium was started in 1998 and is sponsored by the Office of Student Development and Programming.

The bestselling novel, "Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison", landed Kerman on the map.  Her experiences have led to her work as an advocate for prison reform and she is on the board of the Women's Prison Association.

Kerman has testified before Congress about issues in the prison system.  In 2014, Kerman received the Justice Trailblazer Award from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice Center on Media, Crime, & Justice.

Today, Kerman lives with her husband in Columbus, Ohio.  She teaches writing classes at the Marion Correctional Institution and the Ohio Reformatory for Women.
