Cornell University recently welcomed one of the country's top political science professors to campus. Paul Pierson kicked off the school's six-lecture series, Difficulties of Democracy in February.

As part of his presentation, Pierson rapped a parody from the hit play, Hamilton. He centered his conversation on growing inequality and polarization.

Pierson traced the roots of Republican polarization to the party's ideological roots, its geographic edge, an overwhelmingly conservative media and anti-government rhetoric. He also shared what the weaknesses of the Democratic party are.

Pierson holds the John Gross Endowed Chair and is a Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of several books and regularly comments on public affairs.

From 2007-10, Pierson was the Chair of UC Berkeley's political science department. Prior to teaching at the school, he was a professor at Harvard University from 1989-2004.

Pierson was the President of the Politics and History Section of the American Political Science Association from 2003-04. He is a graduate of Oberlin College and Yale University.
