The Center for the Protection of Intellectual Property welcomed one top modern inventors to speak at their recent conference. The originator of the Segway, Dean Kamen, addressed attendees.

It was CPIP's fourth annual conference and it ran October 6-7 at George Mason University's Antonin Scalia Law School. The overall theme of the event was, "Intellectual Property and Global Prosperity."

Kamen spoke against some of the patent laws that are currently on the books. He also shared what he thinks are some solutions to protect inventors better in the future.

Kamen's most well-known invention is the human transporter, the Segway PT. Prior to that creation, he was able to develop the first drug infusion pump

To sell and market the pump, Kamen also founded the company AutoSyringe. He has additional patents through his company DEKA on technology behind portable dialysis machines, insulin pumps and an all-terrain electric wheelchair.

In 1989, Kamen founded the program FIRST that gets students interesting in science, technology and engineering and still exists today. He has received several awards, including induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame.
