Social Justice Activist Joy Degruy Speaks at SDC Summit on Poverty

Recently, an important conference about tackling poverty was held in Milwaukee.  The Social Development Committee held The Summit on Poverty at the Italian Community Center. 

The summit title was, "Dismantling Poverty: A Courageous Conversation".  A capacity crowd turned out to hear from keynote speaker and social justice activist Joy Degruy. 

She discussed how our American history of cultural and racial struggles continues to influence the world we live in today.  Following her presentation, there were several smaller breakout sessions to discuss specific issues. 

Degruy compiled years of research into the book, "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: America’s Legacy of Enduring Injury and Healing."  That book also spawned, "Post Traumatic Slave Syndrome: The Study Guide" and a second book that is currently in the works.

Degruy has spent two decades in social work, which gives her a great background on the struggles of some in American society.  Her seminars come highly regarded and she has spoken at places like Harvard University and Oxford University.  

None of the works Degruy does today would be possible without the strong background of education she received.  She has a bachelor's degree in communication, two master's degrees and a Ph.D. in Social Work Research.
