Discovering the Titanic has given Robert Ballard years of experiences and encounters he could never have expected otherwise.  On Wednesday, he shared some of his insights from his unique journey with students at Hamilton College.

The presentation held at the upstate New York college was also open to the public.  It began promptly at 7:30.

In preparation for his speech, Ballard promoted the event on Northeast Public Radio WAMC.  He shared many stories from his exciting career as an oceanographer.

Ballard has had many notable findings, but is widely recognized in popular culture for his find of the Titanic in 1985.  His mission was actually funded by doing Cold War research for the Navy regarding two sunken submarines.

While the Titanic was his first discovery of note, Ballard has gone on to find other historic vessels.  In 1989, he uncovered the battleship Bismark and he recovered the USS Yorktown in 1998.

Ballard is currently the Director of the Center for Ocean Exploration at the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Oceanography.  He is also a National Geographic Explorer-In-Residence.
